The bridge’s opening is a major step toward revitalising tourism in the state, which had been severely affected by the GLOF disaster.
The much-awaited Bailey Bridge in Sangkhalang, which connects Dzongu in North Sikkim, was officially inaugurated today. The bridge restores important connectivity that was lost after the main bridge was washed away during the 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) disaster.
This bridge is important as it connects 21 villages in the Dzongu region. It will ease transportation for locals and tourists alike, providing much-needed access to the stunning attractions of North Sikkim. Dzongu, known for its natural beauty and cultural significance, is a key destination for travelers seeking a serene escape in the lap of the Himalayas.
The bridge’s opening is a major step toward revitalising tourism in the state, which had been severely affected by the GLOF disaster. It will not only improve the daily lives of residents but also make travel more convenient for tourists visiting the region.
Meanwhile, the Toong-Naga highway remains closed for maintenance work and is expected to reopen on January 31. Until then, all tourist vehicles and locals will have to use the Sangkhalang route for their travels.
A local Panchayat member expressed joy and relief at the bridge’s completion, saying, “This is a big step forward for our community. It will help bring tourists back and make life easier for everyone here.”
The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of the Zilla Panchayat Upa-Adaksha of Mangan District, Sonam Kipa Bhutia, and Colonel Alok Shankar, Commanding Officer of the Trishakti Corps. The event began with traditional rituals, invoking blessings for the safety and longevity of the newly constructed bridge.
