A woman was brutally stabbed to death by a man today in a shocking broad daylight murder that has sent shockwaves throughout Guwahati.
Shockingly, the assailant after brutally attacking her, stabbed himself and is in hospital now.
The incident took place at Nahorni Path Guwahati this morning.
But what exactly happened? Why did the man kill her, and who is he? How did she know him?
Well, Mousumi Gogoi, a resident of Dibrugarh worked at an NGO and lived in a rented house in Guwahati.
Like any other day, Mousumi woke up, and got ready for work this morning, unaware that her life was about to be tragically cut short.
As she stepped out of her rented house, preparing to take a ride with Rapido (a two-wheeler cab service) to her workplace, her lover, Bhupen Das, who had been waiting outside in his car, approached her. In a sudden and brutal act of violence, he stabbed her multiple times in the neck, hand, and abdomen, leaving her gravely injured.
CCTV footage showed that as many as 4 bystanders, including the Rapido biker, looked on in shock as the horrific attack unfolded. None of them intervened to help the victim, who suffered grievous injuries to her neck and abdomen.
After the assailant left, locals quickly rushed Mousumi to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), but she succumbed to her injuries due to severe blood loss and the extent of her wounds.
This heart-wrenching act of violence has sent shockwaves throughout the city, raising questions about women’s safety.
Who is Bhupen Das?
Bhupen Das, a resident of Sariahtoli in Nalbari district, lives in a rented house in Basishta and works as a cab driver in Guwahati. He is a father of two children.
Who is Mousumi Gogoi?
Hailing from Dibrugarh, Mousumi was a mother to a 10-year-old child. As per reports her husband died in an accident a few years ago. She moved to Guwahati last month.
How did they know each other?
Preliminary reports suggest that Bhupen and Mousumi had known each other for four years.
Why did Bhupen Das Killed Mousumi Gogoi?
Speaking to the media, Assam Inspector General of Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, stated that preliminary investigations suggest Bhupen Das committed the crime in a fit of rage after the victim repeatedly rejected his proposal to establish a romantic relationship. Despite her constant rejections, he continued to pressure her. Ultimately, in a moment of uncontrollable anger, he carried out the brutal attack today.
Could Timely Police Action Have Saved the Victim’s Life?
According to locals, the victim had previously filed a complaint against the accused at the Panbazar Women Police Station. However, it remains unclear whether any action was taken by the police following the complaint.
After the incident, police launched an investigation and detained Bhupen Das who stabbed himself soon after stabbing Mousumi. Police rushed him to the GMCH. He is now undergoing treatment.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Superintendent of GMCH, Abhijit Sarma said, “Bhupen have consumed some unknown substance (probably kerosene). He has self-inflicted injuries. Currently, he is being treated and his condition is stable.”
