Ratnesh sent his younger brother an audio message asking their father not to sell their land before he hanged himself.

A second-year MBBS student studying at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, hailing from Assam’s Dibrugarh, allegedly committed suicide, police said on Thursday.

The police stated that on Wednesday, the body of Ratnesh Kumar Mishra (21), was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room. Police believe that Ratnesh committed suicide because of a financial crisis that his family was facing.

As per media reports, Ratnesh sent his younger brother an audio message asking their father not to sell their land before he hanged himself. He also asked his brother to become a doctor but stay in Assam.

Ratnesh’s father told reporters that he spoke to his son in the morning, but could not reach him on his mobile later. As repeated calls went unanswered, he rushed to his hostel and found the door locked from inside. He along with some of the students, then broke the door open and found Ratnesh hanging.

After a 10-day holiday, Ratnesh had returned to campus on Tuesday as his second-year exam was scheduled to begin on Thursday. This time, he had returned to Bhubaneswar with his father.

Ratnesh was supposed to visit the temple town of Puri on Wednesday along with his father, who was staying at a hotel outside the campus, media reports stated.
