Aizawl Faces Internet Slowdown Due to Multi Utility Pole(MUP) Project For Upgradation of City’s Infrastructure

The project has led to significant delays in internet services, affecting residents and businesses alike.
Aizawl is currently experiencing slow internet connectivity due to disruptions caused by the ongoing Multi Utility Pole (MUP) project by Aizawl Smart City Ltd. The project, aimed at upgrading the city’s infrastructure, involves the installation of Multi Utility Poles across key areas in Aizawl, including Bawngkawn and Kulikawn.
However, the project has led to significant delays in internet services, affecting residents and businesses alike.
Aizawl Smart City Ltd. issued several notifications to relevant departments and internet service providers (ISPs), requesting them to relocate their cables to the newly installed MUPs. These notifications began in August 2024, following awareness campaigns with local councillors that started as early as July 2023. Despite the extended timeline, many ISPs failed to meet the relocation deadline. As a result, on November 30, 2024, Smart City Ltd. began cutting cables from ISPs that did not comply with the new regulations.
CC Lalchhuangkima, CEO of Aizawl Smart City Ltd., confirmed that BSNL, Jio, and Airtel were warned about the consequences of non-compliance. BSNL representatives cited delays in receiving approval from their head office and staffing shortages as the main reasons for the delay.
The project’s timing, coinciding with the busy Christmas season, has further contributed to the delay. In response, the deadline has been extended to January 15, 2025, allowing ISPs more time to relocate their cables.
The internet slowdown has significantly impacted several sectors, including banking and business, causing disruptions in daily life. Jio, one of the largest ISPs in Aizawl, assured residents that the issue would be resolved within the next week.
