Imagine walking into the market and seeing green peas priced at Rs 200 per kg. Shocking, right? This is now the reality for buyers in Shillong, Meghalaya where vegetable prices have skyrocketed.
Carrots that once cost Rs 50-60 are now selling for Rs 80-100 a kg. Tomatoes have jumped from Rs 30-40 a kg to Rs 60-80 a kg, and even cauliflower is costing anywhere between Rs 80-90 a kg.
The rising costs are making it harder for households to stick to their budgets, leaving shoppers scrambling for more affordable options.
Even in Iewduh (Bara Bazar), traditionally known for lower prices, vendors and buyers alike are feeling the pinch.
Residents have started adjusting their buying habits by purchasing smaller quantities or switching to cheaper alternatives, but many still worry about the continued strain on their finances.
While the cause of the price hike remains uncertain, frustrations are growing as the cost of living escalates across the region.
