“This project is critical to ensuring the peaceful and prosperous existence of the Siang Basin and our Adi brothers and sisters”, Khandu stated.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday chaired a high-level meeting and assessed the progress of the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Minister Ojing Tasing, Advisor to Minister for Hydro Power Development, Chief Secretary Manish Gupta, DGP Anand Mohan as well as other senior officials of concerned departments.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to social media and said, “Discussed the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project with Hon’ble DyCM Shri Chowna Mein Ji, Hon’ble Minister Shri Ojing Tasing Ji, Hon’ble Advisor (HPD) Shri Ninong Ering Ji, Hon’ble Advisor to CM Shri Alo Libang Ji, and Shri Oni Panyang ji. I was delighted to note the unanimous support from the representatives of both districts for this strategically and environmentally significant project. With the wholehearted backing of the Government of India, we resolved to expedite the construction of the project.”
Sharing his thoughts, the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister further stated that, “The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project is more than just a project —it is vital to preserving our cherished Aane Siang. It was inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and commitment from our community for this project, which is indispensable for the future of the Siang Basin, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nation as a whole.”
“This project is critical to ensuring the peaceful and prosperous existence of the Siang Basin and our Adi brothers and sisters”, Khandu stated.
It may be mentioned that the mega project has been facing stiff opposition from different groups including the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF) who allege that the project would be a threat to their land, environment and way of life.
Earlier, on Monday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of Rs 3,689 crore for the construction of two hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi district. Both projects are expected to be completed within 50 months.
An outlay of Rs 1,939 crore has been sanctioned for the Heo Hydroelectric Project (HEP), while Rs 1,750 crore has been approved for the Tato-I Hydroelectric Project (HEP), according to an official statement issued after the CCEA meeting.
The Heo Hydroelectric Project (HEP), with an installed capacity of 240 MW (3 x 80 MW), is expected to generate 1,000 Million Units (MU) of energy annually. The power produced will enhance the electricity supply in Arunachal Pradesh and contribute to balancing the national grid.
The Tato-I Hydroelectric Project (HEP), with an installed capacity of 186 MW (3 x 62 MW), will generate 802 MU of energy annually, further strengthening the state’s power infrastructure and the national grid.
Both projects will be implemented through a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the government of Arunachal Pradesh.
