Meghalaya has witnessed a significant rise in violence against women, with 628 reported cases in 2023, according to state police data.
East Khasi Hills District recorded the highest number of incidents.
In response, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) launched a 16-day campaign in Shillong to raise awareness about violence against women.
Speaking to media, a member of MSCW said, ” We are raising our voice from this corner of the world, standing in solidarity with women everywhere. On November 25th, a day dedicated to eliminating violence against women, we join the global initiative led by the UN. We want to send a message that even in our region, we are addressing these issues because we feel the impact. While many cases remain unreported, we are encouraged by the growing awareness, particularly through social media, that is enabling more people to come forward. We hope this leads to a significant increase in reporting, allowing us to better assess the situation and take action.”
The campaign, which began today in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, will conclude on December 10.
The initiative kicked off with a roadshow, starting from Nongthymmai and ending at Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah. MSCW Chairperson Iamonlang M. Syiem emphasized the need for collective action to combat violence and ensure the safety of women.
