Assam’s Tea Tribe’s Jhumur Dance with 7,500 Artistes to Take Centre Stage at Global Investor Summit in 2025

Assam’s vibrant cultural heritage will take centre stage at the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0: Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025, scheduled for February 24 and 25.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the event will showcase the traditional ‘Jhumur dance’ of Assam’s tea tribe communities, adding a cultural highlight to the global summit.
Sarma emphasized that the summit serves not only as a platform for attracting investors but also as an opportunity to present Assam’s rich cultural traditions to an international audience.
The grand Jhumur dance performance will feature over 7,500 artists, with 32 women and 32 men from each of Assam’s 800+ tea gardens participating in the dance, making it a spectacle of unprecedented scale.
Preparations for the performance are already in full swing, with master training workshops, district-level performances, and final rehearsals in Guwahati ensuring flawless execution. The performance is set to be a key event during the summit, expected to leave a lasting impression on attendees.
Jhumur is a traditional dance form of “Adivasi” or the Tea tribes community of Assam. The male performers wear long traditional dresses and keep the rhythm with a few traditional musical instruments, generally a Dhol or Mandar, hung on shoulders, a flute and a pair of “Taal” (two metallic discs).
The girls mostly perform the dancing part, holding each other’s waist and moving hands and legs forward and backwards synchronously.
The dance has a huge following in the “Tea tribe” dominated districts of Assam, like Udalguri, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
Advantage Assam 2.0, the second edition of the global investor summit after its 2018 debut, aims to attract investments and foster infrastructure development in the state. With investors from across India and the world expected to attend the summit will reinforce Assam’s growing reputation as an emerging investment hub. Sarma highlighted that this event will symbolize the convergence of culture and commerce in Assam.
