Assam Cabinet Rejig on the Cards, A Face from Barak Valley Likely to be in Himanta Cabinet

An MLA from the Barak Valley is likely to be inducted in the Himanta Biswa Sarma Cabinet as early as next month
A minor rejig of the Assam Cabinet is on the cards ahead of the 2026 Assembly Polls. According to sources, an MLA from the Barak Valley is likely to be inducted in the Himanta Biswa Sarma Cabinet as early as next month.
If this reshuffle happens then this will be the second expansion of the Himanta Biswa Cabinet.
The Himanta Biswa Sarma Government came to power on May 10, 2021. Then the strength of the Cabinet was 14 including CM Sarma. A year later on June 10, 2022, it went up to 16 when CM Sarma added two more BJP legislators – Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah and Haflong MLA Nandita Garlosa, to the Cabinet.
Currently, CM Sarma heads a team of 14 Cabinet Ministers as former cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya got elected to the Lok Sabha as Member of Parliament and brought the number of Cabinet Ministers down to 15:
- Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, General Administration
- Atul Bora, Minister for Agriculture & Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Border Area Protection & Development, Implementation of Assam Accord
- Keshab Mahanta, Minister for Transport, Fisheries, Excise, Science & Technology and Climate Change, Information Technology
- Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Minister for Handloom & Textile. Soil Conservation, Welfare of Bodoland
- Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister for Environment & Forests, Act East Policy Affairs, Welfare of Minorities
- Dr Ranoj Pegu, Minister for Education (Higher, Secondary & Elementary), Tribal Welfare, indegenour and Tribal Faith and Culture Department (Directorates of Library & Museum)
- Ashok Singhal, Minister for Housing &Urban Affairs, Irrigation Department
- Jogen Mohan, Minister for Revenue & Disaster Management, Hills Area Development, Mines & Minerals
- Sanjoy Kishan, Minister for Welfare of Tea Tribes, Labour Welfare
- Ajanta Neog, Minsiter for Finance, Women & Child Development
- Pijush Hazarika, Minister for Water Resources, Information & Public Relations, Parliamentary Affairs, Social Justice & Empowerment
- Bimal Borah, Minister for Industries & Commerce and Public Enterprises, Cultural Affairs
- Jayanta Mallabaruah, Minister for Public Health Engineering, Skill, Employment & Entrepreneurship, Tourism
- Nandita Garlosa, Minister for Power, Sports & Youth Affairs, Cooepration, Indigenour & Tribal Faith and Culture (Directorate of Archaelogy)
Earlier on June 18, 2024, CM Sarma had rejigged the portfolios after Suklabaidya became MP from Silchar.
