Meghalaya is gearing up to embark soon on scientific coal mining under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Addressing to media on this Cabinet Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Kyrmen Shylla expressing high hopes for the initiative. He praised the chief minister’s efforts in achieving recognition for individual ownership of land and the minerals beneath it, a significant step forward accomplished through extensive negotiations with the central government.
“We have high hopes under Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Many things were made possible under his leadership. The CM has tried his best, and we are all supporting him,” Shylla said.
The minister underscored that this achievement is crucial for legalizing coal mining in Meghalaya, which has been stalled for years due to restrictions. He stated that the collaborative approach adopted by the government is key to ensuring progress in this sector.
Shylla suggested that starting scientific coal mining on a small scale will act as a trial run, allowing the state to refine the rules and address potential challenges. “Even if scientific mining begins on a small scale, it will serve as a practical test. We can make adjustments if we encounter challenges,” he said.
Shylla further highlighted that the government’s priority is to ensure the welfare of the public and stakeholders involved in the coal mining process. He said that many individuals have already applied for mining permits on areas of 100 hectares or more, signaling strong interest in the initiative.
“Our priority is to take care of the public and the stakeholders who require our support. Many have applied for coal mining over areas exceeding 100 hectares. Right now, we don’t know if this venture will be profitable or not. But let’s try with those who have applied. Through their efforts, we will understand whether it can be done successfully on a smaller scale,” Shylla remarked.
