This pilot project is just the beginning. Indian Railways plans to deploy up to 35 hydrogen-powered trains across the country
India’s rail network, one of the largest in the world, is set to make history with the introduction of its first hydrogen-powered train. The pilot project is expected to launch in December 2024, marking a major milestone in India’s quest for sustainable transportation.
This eco-friendly train will run on hydrogen fuel cells, producing only water vapor as a byproduct, and will require no diesel or electricity.
Key Features of India’s First Hydrogen Train
Clean Energy: The train runs on hydrogen fuel, producing no harmful emissions.
Quieter Operation: Compared to diesel-powered trains, it will be 60% quieter, making for a more peaceful travel experience.
Efficient Power: With a top speed of 140 km/h, the hydrogen train will cover up to 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of hydrogen.
This new train will require approximately 40,000 liters of water per hour, and special storage facilities will be created to support its operation.
Proposed Routes for the Hydrogen Train
The first route will be the 90-km Jind-Sonipat line in Haryana, with other iconic routes like Darjeeling and Nilgiri Mountain Railways under consideration.
Future Plans: 35 Hydrogen Trains to Be Deployed Across India
This pilot project is just the beginning. Indian Railways plans to deploy up to 35 hydrogen-powered trains across the country. The cost of each hydrogen train is estimated at Rs 80 crore, and the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cells is already being developed. This move is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to embrace green technology and reduce its carbon footprint.
