‘Lost Faith in Biren Singh Government’, Says Meghalaya CM and NPP Leader Conrad Sangma After Party Withdrew Support

Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad Sangma today said that he has been holding in discussions with central leaders, including those from the BJP, to address the escalating crisis in Manipur. Highlighting a growing trust deficit and the state government’s failure to restore peace, Sangma announced his party’s decision to withdraw support from the N. Biren Singh-led government.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Meghalaya, Sangma expressed grave concerns over the worsening situation in Manipur and blamed the leadership of Biren Singh for failing to restore peace and normalcy.

“I have spoken to several central leaders, including BJP leaders, urging them to work towards restoring peace and trust in Manipur. Our decision to withdraw support is not driven by political motives but by the loss of faith in the current government’s ability to handle the crisis effectively,” Sangma stated.

The NPP’s withdrawal marks a significant development, as the party has been a long-time ally of the BJP-led government in Manipur. “If there is a change in leadership and we see a positive plan for peace, we are open to constructive cooperation. However, under the current leadership, all our party leaders and MLAs have lost confidence,” he added.

Sangma highlighted the deteriorating situation in Manipur over the past 18 months, noting a further escalation in violence during the past week. “Trust deficit has been the cause of the crisis. Despite efforts by the state and central governments, the situation has worsened,” he remarked.

He also addressed the recent attacks on the homes of MLAs, calling them unfortunate but understandable given public sentiments. “As the second-largest party in Manipur, the NPP is committed to working positively to find a solution to this problem,” Sangma said.

The NPP submitted its formal letter of withdrawal yesterday, citing the government’s inability to resolve the crisis. Sangma reiterated his party’s willingness to cooperate with any leadership that can bring peace and stability to the troubled state.

Manipur is grappling with an escalating law and order crisis following the discovery of six bodies three women and three children abducted from Jiribam on November 11. The latest wave of violence has plunged the state into turmoil, leading to the imposition of indefinite curfews in seven districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi. Internet services have been suspended to prevent the spread of misinformation and control the deteriorating situation.
