Assam faced a heart breaking day as two separate road accidents claimed the lives of six people, including a 4-year-old child, sparking grief and protests across the state.
The 4-year old died in the road accident which took place at Krishnai in Goalpara district. The child identified as Aayush Bhattacharya tragically lost his life after being hit by an e-rickshaw. Locals, deeply angered by the accident, took to the streets and blocked National Highway-17 in protest.
The blockade left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway for hours, as community members demanded action to prevent further accidents and ensure road safety.
In another fatal accident, which occurred around 11:30 AM on the Silchar-Kalain road at Ranighat, five people lost their lives in a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a Bolero pickup. All four passengers in the auto-rickshaw, along with the driver, were killed instantly in the impact. According to local sources, four of the victims belonged to the same family from Kalain.
The tragic accident triggered outrage and led to a temporary roadblock as residents expressed their grief and frustration. Superintendent of Police (SP) Cachar, Numal Mahatta, along with officers, rushed to the scene to manage the growing tension.
After about an hour and a half, police managed to clear the blockade, allowing traffic to resume, and sent the victims’ bodies to Silchar Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
