In a major anti-insurgency operation, Assam Police’s North East Region (NER) and Eastern Range (ER), led by IGP Satyaraj Hazarika, joined forces with Assam Rifles units (10 AR and 31 AR) and Military Intelligence from Kolkata to launch “Operation Crackdown,” targeting cadres and overground workers (OGWs) of the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) – Independent. This coordinated effort began with intelligence-based operations from October 25 to November 4, focusing on the suspected ULFA (I) networks operating in Upper Assam.
On November 7, security forces successfully apprehended two ULFA (I) linkmen Rinku Nath from Sibsagar district and Tulsi Gogoi from Charaideo district. Both individuals were allegedly involved in ULFA (I) recruitment and terror funding activities and are believed to be linked to high-ranking ULFA (I) officers, SS Brigadier Ganesh Lahon and SS Major General Nayan Medi.
In a follow-up operation on November 9, security forces conducted a sweep across Tinsukia and Majuli districts, resulting in the capture of two active sleeper cell members: SS Captain Bhaiti Pagag, also known as Bhaiti Asom, and SS Captain Kulang Moran, also known as Montu. These individuals have reportedly been in communication with SS Lieutenant General Michel Dekha Pukhan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief at the General Military Headquarters (GMHQ) of ULFA (I).
To date, the operation has led to the apprehension of 14 OGWs and 2 active cadres, signaling a substantial impact on ULFA (I)’s regional network. Authorities emphasized the critical importance of the operation in preempting potential insurgent activities, particularly with the upcoming ULFA (I) Protest Day on November 28, and the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, both of which pose heightened risks for possible IED attacks.
