Long Queues at Tripura Petrol Pumps as Government Rations Fuel Amid Supply Disruptions

Long queues were seen outside petrol pumps across Tripura, as residents waited for hours to refill their vehicle tanks after the state government enforced fuel rationing due to disruptions in supply. The rationing measures, introduced by the state’s Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, is because of the suspension of goods train services on the Lumding-Badarpur rail section and deteriorating road conditions on National Highway 8.
To manage the limited fuel supply, restrictions have been placed on daily fuel purchases two-wheelers are allowed petrol worth up to Rs. 200 per day, three-wheelers up to Rs. 400, and four-wheelers up to Rs. 1,000.
The new limits apply at all petrol stations operated by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). Essential services, such as healthcare and defense, and government vehicles are exempt from these restrictions, while retailers are prohibited from selling petrol in containers to prevent hoarding.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) announced it has canceled all goods and passenger train services on November 10 and 11 to allow uninterrupted restoration work at a derailment site on the Lumding-Badarpur route. Services are suspended between Daotuhaja (DKE) and Mupa (MPP) stations, where repair crews are addressing extensive track damage.
Scheduled train cancellations include the Silchar-Guwahati Express on November 10 and the Guwahati-Silchar Express on November 11, with work taking place from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day.
According to officials, restrictions may be eased if fuel supplies normalize, with local authorities empowered to adjust limits in specific areas, subject to higher-level approval.
The state government has assured residents that the temporary rationing is necessary to manage resources effectively until the rail and road network is restored.
