Tripura’s Advocate General, Siddhartha Shankar Dey has confirmed his decision to resign from his post early next week. Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live over the phone, Dey announced that he would formally submit his resignation papers on Monday.
While he refrained from disclosing specific reasons behind this abrupt decision, he hinted at personal preferences and stated that it was simply time for him to move on.
Reflecting on his tenure, De remarked, “I have had a memorable and successful tenure of four years under two successive Chief Ministers. It was a fulfilling journey, but this is a post that depends on the conveniences of both the government and myself.”
Dey highlighted significant achievements during his four-year term, emphasizing the resolution of longstanding administrative stagnation.
One of his key accomplishments was streamlining the state’s promotion policy, which had been stalled for eight years.
According to Dey, this policy overhaul filled approximately 4,000 vacant positions, accelerating the administrative process and revitalizing the state’s governance framework.
Another noteworthy achievement, Dey added, was the formulation of an appointment policy favoring local candidates.
Recognizing Tripura’s unique challenges as a landlocked state with limited industrial expansion opportunities, Dey stressed that prioritizing locals was crucial for sustainable growth.
He credited the successful implementation of this policy to the collaborative efforts of the state bureaucracy and the dynamic political leadership.
On the contentious issue of the retrenched 10,323 government teachers, whose termination followed a Supreme Court ruling deeming their appointments illegal, De was unequivocal.
He clarified that there was no legal scope for the state government or the High Court to reverse the decision.
“The Supreme Court’s order is final, and the government has no authority to extend their services. Any review of this order lies solely with the Supreme Court, which is highly unlikely,” he asserted.
With his resignation imminent, the legal fraternity in Tripura is bracing for a new chapter, as the government is expected to announce Dey’s successor soon.
