Governor C H Vijayshankar has asked the teachers to urge the students to consider giving “breathing space and normalcy be restored”
Amid North East Hill University (NEHU) students’ hunger strike entering day 3 today, representatives of the teachers’ association of the university met Meghalaya Governor C H Vijayshankar today morning and briefed him about the demands of NEHUTA (NEHU Teachers Association) and the students regarding removing Vice Chancellor P S Shukla and the situation in the university campus.
Governor Vijayshankar expressed concern and urged the teachers to request the students to consider giving “breathing space and normalcy be restored” in the University.
The Governor told the seven-member NEHUTA and Meghalaya Tribal Teachers Association (MeTTA) delegation that he will hold a discussion with all stakeholders after about a week or ten days to arrive at an appropriate solution.
“Governor said he is very concerned about the hunger strike and requested the teachers to appeal for considering some breathing space to allow sometime to arrive at a mutually discussed position of short term and long term solution,” Professor Prasenjit Biswas, Vice President of NEHUTA told Northeast Live after the meeting that lasted for close to an hour at the Governor’s House in Shillong.
“Hon’ble Governor gave us and members of the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers Association of the University a patient hearing and took cognizance of irregularities in selection process, disruptions in academic, teaching and research and contended that the University exists for students and therefore, he is concerned and affected by their plight, especially about falling health conditions of hunger strikers,” Prof Biswas said adding, “Hon’ble Governor did not ask us for modalities of immediate solution, nor we suggested one.”
The NEHU Students Union has said that they would continue their hunger strike for now.
