Three districts of Mizoram—Aizawl, Saitual, and Kolasib—are preparing for the Sinlung Hills Council elections scheduled for tomorrow. Election kits, including voting compartments, ballot papers, and ballot boxes, were distributed from designated offices early this morning.

A total of 49 candidates are contesting for the 12-member Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) polls. In the last elections held in November 2019, 41 candidates participated. With one BJP candidate withdrawing from the race, the final count stands at 49 candidates, including one woman.

In Aizawl District, there are a total of six constituencies with 19 polling stations. Kolasib has two constituencies with seven polling stations, while Saitual District comprises four constituencies with 12 polling stations.

The final electoral roll for the upcoming election was published on September 30, 2024. There are a total of 23,789 voters, consisting of 11,875 males and 11,914 females.

Campaigning for the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) election in Mizoram concluded on Sunday, with elections set for Tuesday. While the official campaigning deadline was Sunday, political parties held functions on Saturday to mark the end of their campaigning efforts as Sunday is Church Day in Mizoram.

Inter-state and inter-dictrict borders at Zokhawthiang, Khawpuar, Zilthawchhuah (Vaitin) and Luakchhuah (New Vervek) have been sealed for peaceful and free and fair conduct of the elections.

The first election for the Sinlung Hills Council took place in 2019, with 20,194 voters. The number of voters has increased by 2,875 in 2024.

The Sinlung Hills Council encompasses an area around the inter-state borders with Assam and Manipur. It includes 31 villages across three different rural development blocks within three districts. According to the 2011 Census, the population stands at 30,160, with a literacy rate of 94.68% and 95.27% of the population belonging to Scheduled Tribes.
