NLAM Opposes Hill Areas Committee’s (HAC) Resolution to Establish 20-Member Nominated Committee
The Naga Lawyers’ Association Manipur (NLAM) has strongly opposed the Hill Areas Committee’s (HAC) resolution to establish a 20-member nominated committee to oversee the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the hills of Manipur until the next elections. The NLAM has expressed serious concern and said that the resolution bypasses the standard democratic process, which directs election on the sole basis of adult suffrage. In a memorandum submitted to the Governor of Manipur today, the association questioned the ‘unprecedented Resolution’ recommended to the Government of Manipur, which proposes appointing former ADC members and local experts to manage the councils.
