123-Year-Old St. Anthony’s Lower Primary School, Shillong, A Heritage Building, To Make Way for a Modern Building

The replacement of St. Anthony’s iconic building emphasises the delicate balance between modernization and heritage in Shillong.
St. Anthony’s Lower Primary School, a cherished landmark in Shillong, is set to be dismantled due to rising security concerns and to meet growing demands of students.
This 123-year-old heritage building, renowned for its wooden and Assam-type colonial structure, has stood as a symbol of history and tradition in Don Bosco Square.
Increasing infrastructure challenges have prompted the school administration to plan for a new concrete facility to better accommodate its growing student body.
The distinctive character of Shillong’s original wooden and colonial buildings is gradually fading. St. Anthony’s building is ageing and the structure is struggling to keep pace with contemporary safety and durability standards, especially with nearly 700 students enrolled.
To ensure a seamless transition, the school administration has developed plans to maintain uninterrupted classes for Nursery, KG, and grades 4 and 5 during the demolition and reconstruction phases. The new G+4 concrete building will provide essential upgrades, accommodating the increasing student population while adhering to modern safety regulations.
The replacement of St. Anthony’s iconic building emphasizes the delicate balance between modernization and heritage in Shillong. As the city progresses, these developments highlight the challenges of preserving historical charm amid rising infrastructure demands, marking a significant shift in Shillong’s evolving architectural identity.
