IPFT-Tipra Alliance on the Cards? A Decision Likely Just Ahead of Village Council Polls Say IPFT Leader
First Published: 29th October, 2024 20:19 IST
The village council elections are likely to be held in December this year.
Will the upcoming village council polls shape the future of politics in Tripura? Will the two regional parties – Tipra Motha and IPFT, both of whom are allies of the BJP, join hands for the village council polls?
After a week of Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma said that both Motha and IPFT should always stay united and contest polls jointly, IPFT general secretary Swapan Debbarma today said that a decision on forging an alliance with the TIPRA Motha for the village council polls will be taken once the election dates are announced.
“Our central executive committee meeting was held. We have taken a decision on this but we will not make the announcement now. BJP, IPFT and Tipra Motha are together in the government now but whether we will fight the village elections alone or we will join hands with some party, we will decide just after the village council election dates are announced,” Debbarma told reporters in Agartala.
It needs to be mentioned here that this is not the first time that talks about a possible alliance between IPFT and Tipra Motha has come up. Similar talks had happened ahead of the 2023 Tripura Assembly. In fact at that point of time, N C Debbarma the then president of IPFT along with then IPFT leader and former minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia had announced about joining hands with Tipra Motha but it did not happen.
IPFT’s present strength as a party is not too good as it is left with just one MLA in the Tripura Assembly. Most of its leaders have joined Tipra Motha.
In case IPFT and Tipra Motha join hands or decide to merge, it will mark the beginning of a new phase in Tripura’s politics and tribal politics will take centre stage.
The village council elections are likely to be held in December this year.
