Within hours of a doctor’s home being attacked and a live grenade being left at his residence in Thoubal District, a bomb was found early this morning at the gate of GP Women’s College in Imphal, triggering a major security situation in the city. The explosive device was discovered at around 5:30 a.m. today.
The Manipur Police bomb squad arrived shortly after, and safely defused the bomb at Lamphel dumping site at around 6:40 a.m, Manipur Police officials told Northeast Live.
Police found handwritten notes at the site with inflammatory slogans. The motive behind the incident remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility so far.
The college’s location, just a few meters away from key government buildings including Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister’s Bungalow, Manipur Police Headquarters, and the 1st Manipur Rifles Battalion, has raised concerns about the law and order in the state as reports have also come in about fresh firing in Koutruk in the early morning hours of October 26.
Recently, a group of seven armed miscreants broke into the home of Dr. Laishram Somen , owner of Sur Hospital, attacked him and his family. The attackers took away four mobile phones. and left behind the live hand grenade. As soon as the attackers fled, the family called the police who defused the grenade.
