The Sikkim Government is planning to introduce an odd-even vehicle restriction for both private and government vehicles within the Gangtok Municipal Area, specifically along the National Highway from Mayfair Fatak to GICI, Zero Point. The move aims to reduce traffic congestion on the heavily used highway. Timeline for starting this restriction is not yet announced by the authorities.

According to an official letter issued by the Home Department, officers at the level of Additional Secretary and above will be exempt from this restriction and will receive Red Exemption stickers provided by the Protocol Section of the department.

The letter further asked to provide the details of officers at the level of Joint Secretary and below, who may also require exemption, be submitted by October 26, 2024, with valid justifications for evaluation by higher authorities.

Delhi used this scheme for the first time in 2016. The scheme restricts the vehicles on the road based on their license plate numbers. Private vehicles with registration numbers ending with an odd digit will be allowed on roads on odd dates and those with an even digit on even dates. The odd-even rule mainly targets the emissions from cars, which are a major cause of air pollution.
