Sick Man Carried on Bamboo Stretcher from a Manipur Village to Nagaland For Treatment

The patient, Wangtangkhaibou Pamai, has reportedly received treatment at Peren District Hospital in Nagaland.

People of Nallong village in the Kuilong area of Tamenglong district, Manipur, continues to face extreme hardship due to lack of basic healthcare facilities and proper roads.

In a tragic incident on Friday, a sick man had to be transported 50 km on a makeshift bamboo stretcher to reach the nearest hospital in Peren, Nagaland, as no healthcare services are available in the village.

The patient, a 33-year-old Wangtangkhaibou Pamai, was carried by local villagers on the makeshift bamboo stretcher. The absence of motorable roads, electricity, and mobile connectivity has made it nearly impossible for the residents of Nallong and surrounding villages to access even the most basic services.

Sadly, this is not an isolated case. On August 15, 2023, as the rest of the nation celebrated Independence Day, six critically ill patients from the same village were also carried long distances on bamboo stretchers to receive medical care. Many such untold tragedies have occurred in the region over the years, with villagers often suffering in silence.

Nallong is located about 70 km from Tamei, where the nearest healthcare facility exists, while Peren, Nagaland, is about 50 km away. However, with no functional roads, villagers have had no choice but to resort to such desperate measures. Vehicular movement has been impossible since May due to the dilapidated, unpaved roads, further isolating the community.

The villagers blame government neglect for their situation, citing a lack of action from local leaders, MLAs, and even the state’s Health Minister. Despite numerous appeals, no one has come forward to address their pleas. Basic rights such as healthcare and the right to life are being denied to the residents, leading to frequent health crises and preventable deaths.

The people of Nallong and the Kuilong area are calling for immediate intervention from the Directorate of Health Services, local MLAs, and the Health Minister of Manipur. They demand urgent action to improve healthcare access and infrastructure, warning that any future health emergencies or fatalities due to this neglect will hold authorities accountable.

The patient, Wangtangkhaibou Pamai, has reportedly received treatment at Peren District Hospital in Nagaland, but the villagers continue to await support from the Manipur government.
