Assam: 4 Cyber Criminals Duping People Through OK SMS Application Arrested

In a significant development, the Assam Police has busted a gang of cyber criminals who were operating from Guwahati as their base.
Assam Police’s cyber cell and Hatigaon Police in Guwahati arrested four individuals for allegedly duping several persons of their hard-earned through the OK SMS application.
The sleuths arrested the four individuals from the Jutikuchi area of Guwahati, identified as Mukhtar Ali, Mustafa Ali, Javed Ali, and Ajimuddin. The arrestees were residents of Hajo.
This comes after several previous arrests related to similar crimes where the accused creates bank accounts in the name of individuals either forcibly, or by duping them. The accounts are then sold to cyber criminals outside the.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the racket lured gullible individuals in the name of offers before finally convincing them to install the app on their phones.
Soon thereafter the racket resorted to cloning apps and siphoned off money from bank accounts of the individuals.
The police are now tracing links to cyber criminals operating outside the state who were being supplied with these bank accounts.
It may be mentioned that in yet another significant breakthrough last month in the ongoing statewide crackdown against online scamsters, Assam police arrested 27 people from various parts of the state.
They all were accused of running scams where they took deposits from victims, promising to double their money within a specified time frame.
Of the 27, 12 persons were arrested from Hailakandi, 5 from Dalgaon in Darrang, 3 from Sonitpur, 2 each from Sivasagar, Dhubri and Jorhat and 1 from Hojai.
