Assam Bypolls: Nomination Process Begins, 9 Lakh Voters to Exercise Franchise in 5 Assembly Seats

The last date for filling nomination is October 25 and the date for withdrawal of nomination is October 30.

Over nine lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise to pick their representatives for the Assembly seats of Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Bihali, and Samaguri. Voting (bypoll) for these seats would be held on November 13 and counting of votes will take place on November 23.

Of the total of 9,10,665 voters, including 2,796 service voters, Dholai has 1,97,642 voters, Sidli 2,17,236 voters, Bongaigaon 1,82,354 voters, Bihali 1,32,579 voters, and Samaguri has 1,80,854 voters, Assam, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anurag Goel said in a press briefing today.

There are also 4,197 voters with disabilities (PWD) and 3,788 voters over the age of 85, he added.

In total, 1,078 polling stations will be set up, with Dholai having 208 stations, Sidli having 273, Samaguri having 197, Bongaigaon having 246 and Behali having 154 polling stations.

The nomination process started today. The last date for filling nomination is October 25 and the date for withdrawal of nomination is October 30.

The final scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on October 28.

The by-elections will be conducted using the pre-delimitation constituency map, CEO Goel said.

CEO Goel further said that, voting will take place on November 13, between 7 AM and 5 PM through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Goel stated that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into force in all five districts. Nine flying squads and nine static surveillance teams have been assigned to each constituency to ensure compliance and control election expenditure.

Sufficient EVMs are available, with 200% backup machines to address any technical issues. Updated voter lists will be delivered to voters’ doorsteps.
