Despite numerous Durga Pujas across Tripura, Durgabari remains the focal point for its rich history and royal patronage.
The 148-year-old Durga Puja at Durgabari temple in Agartala, started by the kings of Tripura centuries ago and funded by the state government for the past 75 years, continues to attract thousands of devotees from across the region.
Established during the reign of the Manikya dynasty that ruled Tripura, this Puja has remained a significant cultural and religious event in the region.
Located opposite the grand Ujjayanta Palace, Durgabari’s Durga Puja is unique, as the state government has sponsored the festival since Tripura’s merger with the Indian Union 75 years ago.
This tradition, mandated by the merger agreement, makes Tripura the only state where the government funds a Hindu festival, regardless of which political party is in power.
The West Tripura District Magistrate (DM), serving as the ‘Sebayet’ or chief organizer, oversees the festival’s arrangements, which must be approved by the royal family.
While some practices have evolved, Bibhu Kumari Devi, the present elderly member of the royal family, still plays a key role in finalizing the rituals.
Unlike other idols the Durga idol at Durgabari is distinct, featuring only two prominent arms.
It is said that this practice began when a queen of the Manikya dynasty got scared seeing the traditional ten-armed depiction overwhelming.
The festival concludes with the immersion of the idol at Dashamighat, accompanied by full state honors, including a police band.
Despite numerous Durga Pujas across Tripura, Durgabari remains the focal point for its rich history and royal patronage.
