Assam: Primate Research Centre NE India Launches Canopy Bridge to Save Endangered Golden Langurs

First Published: 5th October, 2024 18:29 IST

This new initiative aims to safeguard the species, which is threatened by habitat loss and infrastructure development.

In a major step toward wildlife conservation, the Primate Research Centre NE India has launched an innovative initiative to protect the endangered golden langur, a species facing severe threats due to habitat loss and traffic incidents in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

Dr. Jihusu Biswas, a leading researcher at the Centre, has been studying the golden langurs in Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the largest population of this rare species in India. Around 1,000 golden langurs are found in the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bongaigaon, and Dhubri.

However, rapid infrastructure development and increased traffic have led to many langurs falling victim to road accidents while crossing busy highways. Electrocution from overhead power lines is another significant threat.

In response, the Primate Research Centre has constructed a specialized canopy bridge, designed to allow the golden langurs to safely move above roads, reducing the risk of accidents. The bridge is equipped with monitoring cameras to track the langurs’ movements and ensure their safety.

Dr. Biswas highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve the golden langur’s habitat and ensure their long-term survival. “This is a crucial step in reducing human-animal conflict and protecting a species that is already vulnerable,” he said.

The Centre’s efforts are expected to significantly reduce fatalities and contribute to the conservation of this rare primate, which is listed as endangered due to its shrinking habitat and increasing human encroachment.
