Assam: BPF Gears Up for Sidli Bypoll, Party VP Suddha Basumatary Among Frontrunners as Party Candidate

First Published: 25th September, 2024 18:46 IST

The BPF has already stepped up its activities as party leaders are reaching out to the voters by holding rallies even in the small pockets.

As Assam gears up for the bypolls to 5 Assembly seats, the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) is holding rallies and stepping up its campaign for the Sidli seat. While the BJP and UPPL will fight for the seat as alliance partners, BPF is planning to go solo.

Party vice-president Shuddha Basumatary’s name is emerging as the frontrunner for the party ticket.
Shuddha Basumatary, after attending a party rally exuded confidence of his party’s good show in the upcoming election, for which a date is yet to be announced.

Basumatary claimed that the position of the BPF is very strong and believes that the party will surely celebrate victory when the results will be announced.

Reacting to reports suggesting that the BPF is in talks with the UPPL for the purpose of forging an alliance, Suddha Basumatary maintained that leadership of both the parties are deliberating to decide on this.

“Currently, I am unable to comment on collaboration, but discussions for an alliance between the BPF and the UPPL are ongoing. But nothing is finalized as of now,” Basumatary said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) will contest the Sidli seat with the support of its allies, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

On September 18, BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary, during a massive joining program of the BPF held at Kashiabari under the Gossaigaon Subdivision in Kokrajhar, said, “Discussions are going on between three leaders from BPF and six others from UPPL for a possible alliance.”

It may be mentioned here that the 5 seats–Sidli, Behali, Bongaigaon, Dholai and Samaguri– fell vacant as the MLAs representing these seats were elected as MPs in the recently held 18th Lok Sabha polls.
The Sidli seat fell vacant as Joyanta Basumatary of the UPPL who was representing the seat as the MLA, was elected from the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat as Member of Parliament.
