In a significant development, Assam Police busted a high-profile racket that duped firms outside the state, netting crores of rupees through fake work orders issued under the names of various development councils and impersonating as senior Assam Government officials.

The police arrested Ashim Das, the president of BJP’s state SC Morcha and Birinchi Barkatoky, a retired employee of the Directorate of Small Savings, Assam in connection with the case. Following these developments, the BJP has suspended Das from his position.

As per sources, both the accused had duped several persons hailing from outside Assam in the name of issuing fake work orders against different contracts.

Prima facie, Ashim Das who is the mastermind of the racket, had introduced Birinchi Barkakoty as an official of the Assam Government, of the Joint Secretary level to deceive the victims. Preliminary probe suggests that both Ashim and Birinchi were engaged in back to back meetings with individuals from outside the state at the high security Secretariat in Guwahati as part of the modus operandi.
