Naorem expressed his disappointment with the Miss Universe’s decision of not including Miss Universe Manipur 2024 Danube Kangjam in the top 20 list of contestants.
In a surprising move, Robert Naorem, the State Director for Miss Universe Manipur, has given up the ‘Best National Costume Award – People’s Choice’ awarded to Miss Universe Manipur Danube Kangjam at the Miss Universe India 2024 pageant held in Jaipur on September 22, 2024.
Naorem expressed his disappointment with the Miss Universe’s decision of not including Kangjam in the list of top 20 contestants.
Naorem said that the top 20 list is “unfair. The people of Manipur are unhappy with the list as they feel Kangjam truly deserved a place among the top 20 competitors.”
He said that despite winning acclaim for her national costume, Kangjam’s failure to secure a position in the top 20 list of competitors has left her supporters disheartened.
Danube Kangjam wore ‘Manipuri Potloi’ in a voluminous silhouette with profound symbolism embodying the enduring spirit of womanhood, with the red hue symbolizing strength and passion. At the heart of the ensemble was the wing of the ethereal Shirui Lily and perched atop is the Nongin bird and behind a flowing inaphee adorned with the majestic Sangai and Meitei Mayek script. She tells a powerful story of Manipur’s resilence, ecological treasures, sartorial heritage and cultural legacy of the state.
Kangjam, who is also the titleholder of the 18th Sunsilk Miss Mega Northeast beauty pageant in 2021, received the ‘Best National Costume Award – People’s Choice’ award for her breathtaking ‘Manipuri Potloi’ costume, which was designed by Naorem.
