A former member of the banned HNLC, now working as an overground operative, was arrested for collecting money from victims allegedly targeted by the militant outfit

A surrendered cadre of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) was arrested on Thursday night for his alleged involvement in extortion activities, including collecting money from individuals served with demand notes allegedly issued by the outfit.

The accused, Sromwell Mawdoh (41), was apprehended from his residence in Umpling Dongsharum under Rynjah police station. According to Ri Bhoi police, Mawdoh, despite surrendering, continued to work as an overground operative (OWG) for the HNLC, aiding in the collection of funds through demand notes.

Police sources confirmed that Mawdoh had surrendered several years ago along with former KSU leader Frederick Kharmawphlang to East Khasi Hills police.

However, his recent involvement in illegal activities led to his arrest.

The arrest comes a day after the Meghalaya Police stating that the East Khasi Hills Police has registered two extortion cases involving operatives of a banned rebel outfit who are targeting businessmen in Meghalaya’s Shillong.

According to police sources, a suo-moto case was filed at Sadar Police Station on September 17 after a WhatsApp message demanding money was sent to a businessman.
