Frustrated by non-availability of power at their homes resulting in a water crisis, residents of Madhyapara, Manikyanagar Gram Panchayat in Sepahijala district, blocked the busy Bishalgarh-Boxanagar road on Wednesday morning.

Carrying water pitchers, many of the protesters primarily women voiced their anger over the power failure that had disrupted the piped water supply, leaving the community in distress. Despite multiple complaints, the power department had failed to resolve the issue, leading to rising tensions in the area.

Protesters alleged that the prolonged outage had left them struggling to cope with the extreme heat and a lack of water for essential daily needs. The residents also expressed safety concerns over the power infrastructure, claiming that recently installed power cables were of poor quality and could lead to accidents. Despite their repeated requests for the replacement of these faulty cables, no action had been taken.

The road blockade, which began at 8 AM, caused significant traffic disruption. Local police officials and community leaders arrived at the scene to negotiate with the protesters, who initially refused to lift the blockade, demanding immediate redressal of their grievances.

After hours of negotiations and the arrival of power department staff, who assured the residents that both the power outage and water supply issues would be swiftly addressed, the protesters agreed to withdraw the blockade. The road was finally cleared after four hours of disruption.

This incident highlights growing discontent in rural areas over the lack of reliable basic services and perceived negligence by the authorities
