The Irula tribe in Tamil Nadu and the Irula Cooperative Snake Catchers Society, continues to blend its traditional expertise in playing a crucial role, saving the lives of thousands of snake bite victims, across the country. For generations, the Irula tribe has been catching poisonous snakes from the wild to extract venom, which is then used to produce anti-venom. This ancient practise has been passed down through generations, with tribe members praying to and treating snakes as their own children. The snakes are caught and kept in captivity for a period and subjected to a harmless venom extraction process four times. After extraction, the snakes are released back into the wild unharmed. The extracted venom is supplied to pharmaceutical companies, which is used to produce anti-venom.
