The Assam Cabinet today gave its approval to hand over the investigation into the multi-crore online trading scam to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after the Cabinet meeting.

Speaking to the media, CM Sarma said, “As many as 32 cases related to online trading scams have been registered in Assam, and today the cabinet has decided to transfer all registered cases to the CBI for investigation.”

“Since the gravity of the cases was too high, the government will hand over the cases to the CBI soon”, he added.

“The decision was taken after he discussed the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah”, he added.
Meanwhile, the transfer of the cases to the CBI would take about a month due to certain procedures involved, Sarma stated.

He further claimed that the state government and police are checking for other similar scams in the state.
Along with the 32 cases, any new similar cases found during investigations would also be given to the CBI, Sarma added.

So far, over 65 people have been arrested in connection with the scam, and 14 SITs set up to investigate the cases registered across districts under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, besides the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Earlier today, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma made this big revelation stating that it was he, who got the online trading scam busted, after getting suspicious over the huge contribution offer to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

However, Sarma did not reveal, as to who made the offer to contribute Rs 1 crore to the Chief Minister’s relief fund.

Sarma said though his government cracked the case and arrested those involved it was being unfairly targeted.

CM Sarma also lashed out at those blaming him for the mega online trading scam stating that accusing him amounted to indirectly backing the scamsters.

CM Sarma was also critical of the police for escorting Sumi Borah and her husband Tarkik to Gymkhana in Dibrugarh after their arrest and even allowing a TV channel to interview them. The Assam CM expressed concern over the relation between some police officers and journalists. He added that he immediately called the DGP after seeing the interview and has asked for an investigation.
