Tripura: TSF Stages Protest In Agartala, Demands Use Of Roman Script In Kokborok Language

Hamalu Jamatia, general secretary of TSF urged tribal Ministers and MLAs to introduce a bill on the matter during the ongoing Assembly session.
As the Tripura Legislative Assembly’s three-day session began today, the TIPRA Students’ Federation (TSF), one of the largest student organizations primarily comprising tribal students today staged a protest in Agartala, demanding for the introduction of a Bill to officially recognize the Roman script for the Kokborok language.
With intent to attract attention from both the public and lawmakers, the protestors staged the protest on the busy VIP Road in Agartala, a key road connecting the airport, Secretariat, Assembly, High Court, and various districts causing traffic congestion.
Speaking to media, Hamalu Jamatia, general secretary of TSF said that the recognition of the Roman script for Kokborok language is a long-standing demand and the language deserves the same treatment and respect as other languages.
He urged tribal Ministers and MLAs to introduce a bill on the matter during the ongoing Assembly session.
“We want the Ministers and MLAs to discuss our demand for the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language in the ongoing Assembly session and to accord it the same respect as is given to other languages,” said Jamatia.
The longstanding demand for the Roman script for the Kokborok language spoken by the majority of the indigenous population in Tripura has remained unaddressed for more than five decades.
Currently, TIPRA Motha, the largest regional political party in Tripura, is a part of the ruling alliance led by the BJP, with 13 MLAs, including two Ministers.
This makes the demand for the Roman script particularly significant within the political landscape of the state.
