3 Cong MLAs Abstain from Tripura Rajya Sabha By-Election Protesting Ruling Party’s Alleged Undemocratic Attitude

Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee has been elected as the Rajya Sabha member from the state.

Three Congress MLAs-Sudip Roy Barman, Birajit Sinha, and Gopal Roy abstained from voting for the by-election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the state protesting the undemocratic attitude and atrocities done by the ruling party during the recently held three-tier Panchayat elections in Tripura.

The Congress legislators accused the ruling party of orchestrating large-scale violence against opposition candidates and supporters, which they claim undermined the democratic process.

The Panchayat elections, held just weeks before the Rajya Sabha by-election, were marred by reports of voter intimidation and suppression, particularly targeting opposition members.

Speaking to media MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “There is a limited scope of the electoral exercise in the by-election for the Rajya Sabha seat. It involved only 60 voters to elect the MP.
The ruling party during the recent three-tier Panchayat elections, restricted voting and deprived people of their rights. So we do not want to give the ruling party the option to claim a victory as a victory of democracy. Therefore, we decided to abstain from voting protesting against the undemocratic attitude of the ruling party.”

The by-election saw a total of 57 votes cast.

Securing 47 votes in the by-election, Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee has been elected as the Rajya Sabha member from the state.
