Bivek Chettri creates history, becomes first Sikkimese to referee the prestigious I-League 3rd Division football match

Bivek has built an impressive officiating resume, participating in high-profile tournaments across the country.

Bivek Chettri, a 26-year-old from Lower Tumin, Sikkim, has made history by becoming the first referee from the state to officiate in the prestigious I-League 3rd Division. His remarkable achievement highlights Sikkim’s growing presence in the world of Indian football, both on and off the field.

Bivek’s journey as a referee began in 2018 at the school level under the Sikkim Football Association (SFA). He quickly distinguished himself through his dedication and skill, officiating numerous local matches before advancing to higher levels of competition. His rapid rise caught the attention of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), leading to his selection for the Project Future India programme in 2020. This national initiative, designed to nurture talented referees, provided him with advanced training in Bangalore and Madhya Pradesh, further sharpening his abilities.

Since then, Bivek has built an impressive officiating resume, participating in high-profile tournaments across the country. His refereeing credentials include stints at the BC Roy Tyre 1 tournament, the Senior Women’s Group Stage in Nadia, West Bengal, the Khelo India Youth Games in Chennai, the Guwahati Premier League, the North East Olympic Games, the Sub Junior National Championship in Assam, and the Swami Vivekananda Under-20 National Football Championship in Chhattisgarh.

Bivek’s latest accomplishment came when the AIFF selected him to officiate in the I-League 3rd Division, recognizing his outstanding performances in previous tournaments.

He recently officiated a match in Diphu, Assam, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Coming from a supportive family, Bivek is the son of Madhu Maya Chettri and Arjun Chettri. He completed his schooling at Mangan Senior Secondary School and attributes much of his success to the encouragement he received from his family and community.

Bivek Chettri’s historic achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring referees from Sikkim and across India, proving that with talent, hard work, and perseverance, anything is possible.
