CM Sarma also informed that the Tinsukia Medical College will become operational later this year, increasing the number of operational medical colleges to 13

The Assam government will establish five more medical colleges in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Majuli, Hojai, and Haflong, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the Autumn Session of the Assam Assembly today.

“Once these hospitals are established, we will be able to do away with the concept of district hospitals in the state,” the Chief Minister added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma informed that a medical team will visit Hojai by the end of this year to conduct a land survey for the proposed medical college. He urged Hojai MLA Ramkrishan Ghosh to identify a few plots for the same.

The Chief Minister further noted that the state government has initiated several steps to improve the health sector in Assam.

“Among the steps the state government has initiated are upgrading district hospitals to medical colleges. The government is also working on introducing a wellness concept by amalgamating naturopathy, Ayurveda, and yoga,” the Chief Minister added.

Chief Minister Sarma also informed that the Tinsukia Medical College will become operational later this year, which will increase the number of operational medical colleges in the state to 13.

“Next year, we will inaugurate Pragjyotish Medical College & Hospital, Guwahati’s second medical college. In 2026, we will inaugurate three more medical colleges in Bongaigaon, Charaideo, and Bishwanath. This means we will have around 23 medical colleges and hospitals within the next 2-3 years,” Chief Minister Sarma concluded.
