Harijan Panchayat Committee Seeks More Time to Respond to Govt’s Relocation Proposal

The Harijan Panchayat Committee has requested that the next meeting on this issue be postponed until the last week of September.
The Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) on Monday requested Meghalaya government to give it more time to respond to the government’s proposal for the relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong.
This came after the 15-day time granted by the state government to the HPC for communicating its final decision on the proposal expired today.
In a statement, Gurjit Singh, Secretary of the Harijan Panchayat Committee, explained that the Deputy Chief Minister recently asked the Committee to provide a final decision within two weeks. However, Singh emphasized that this timeframe is inadequate for consulting key leaders and organizations within the Sikh community.
The Committee plans to seek advice from prominent Sikh authorities, including the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee in Amritsar, and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, among others. Given the current engagements and prior commitments of these leaders, they will be unavailable for consultation for the next two to three weeks.
As a result, the Harijan Panchayat Committee has requested that the next meeting on the issue be postponed until the last week of September.
“The Committee is hopeful that by that time, they will be able to present a well-considered response that reflects the consensus of the broader community,” the Committee said in the statement.
The Committee has respectfully asked for the cooperation of the Government of Meghalaya in addressing this significant matter.
