So who is Pavel Durov?

Pavel Durov is a Russian entrepreneur whose influence extends far beyond the digital realm. Forbes estimates his fortune at an impressive $15.5 billion.

Durov’s journey in the world of social media began in 2006 when he co-founded VKontakte, often referred to as the Russian Facebook.

VKontakte swiftly rose to prominence, becoming Russia’s largest social networking site. However, in 2014, the young entrepreneur came under immense pressure to shut down opposition communities on VKontakte. Durov refused to comply and left Russia. According to a report published in The Hindustan Times, Durov sold his stake in VKontakte and began his self-imposed exile.

Meanwhile, Durov unveiled his next venture- the Telegram messaging app- in 2013.

Within a short period, Telegram emerged as a formidable competitor to other established social media and messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat.

It is worth mentioning here that ever since leaving Russia, Pavel Durov has maintained a nomadic lifestyle, seeking refuge in different countries and cities, including Berlin, London, Singapore, and San Francisco.

Ultimately, he found a base in Dubai, where the company is currently headquartered, news agency AFP reported.

In 2021, Durov received French citizenship. According to various media reports, Durov also holds citizenship in the United Arab Emirates and St. Kitts and Nevis, a picturesque dual-island nation nestled in the Caribbean.
