The joint team would design and put into action a plan to redirect waters coming from Meghalaya to Silshaku Beel and Dipor Bil over the next the 3 years
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that a team of experts from the Netherlands, and experts from IIT Guwahati and IIT-Roorkee will come up with a plan to solve the Guwahati floods problem.
The joint team would design and put into action a plan to redirect water coming from Meghalaya to Silshaku Beel and Dipor Bil in the next 3 years to alleviate the chronic flooding problems that affect Guwahati and surrounding areas.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed optimism that this strategic intervention will make a significant difference in flood mitigation, enhancing the resilience of Guwahati’s infrastructure and safeguarding communities from the adverse impacts of flooding.
CM Sarma also said that Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has suggested setting up a joint expert committee comprising officials from both Meghalaya and Assam governments to investigate whether the waters from Jorabat are contributing to the flooding problems in Guwahati and find a solution to this.
Earlier, after Guwahati witnessed severe waterlogging in several areas owing to severe rainfall on August 7, CM Sarma accused the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) of contributing to Guwahati’s worsening flash flood situation through rampant hill cutting and reiterated his ‘Flood Jihad’ charge at the University.
CM Sarma said that the hill has been cut in such a way that all the water flowed down to Assam.
