Traditionally held in Shillong and Guwahati, this is the first time the NEC plenary will take place in Tripura, underscoring the state's rising importance in regional affairs

Tripura will host the North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary meet on August 31 for the first time. Traditionally the NEC meets have been held in Shillong and Guwahati since it came into being in 1972 for the development of the 8 northeastern states.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha made the announcement today during Raksha Bandhan celebrations, expressing immense pride in the state’s selection as the host for this prestigious meeting.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Manik Saha said, “This is a matter of great pride for Tripura as we host the NEC meeting for the first time.”

The two-day meeting to be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, as well as the Chief Ministers and Governors of all North Eastern states, is expected to focus on key issues such as the development of the North Eastern region, border concerns with Bangladesh, and the progress of various ongoing projects.

Top officials, including the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police from the North Eastern states, will also be present.

Chief Minister Saha emphasized that preparations are underway to ensure the smooth execution of the event, adding that he will soon chair a review meeting to assess the arrangements.

“Preparations are being made to ensure the successful execution of the event. I will soon lead a review meeting to evaluate the preparations.”, he added.

Hosting the NEC meeting reflects Tripura’s growing prominence in shaping the development agenda of the North Eastern region, the CM said.
