The MLAs had demanded a unanimous decision of the House to seek an appointment with PM Narendra Modi, which was rejected by the Speaker

All the five opposition MLAs of the Congress party staged a walkout from the Manipur Assembly on Friday after the Speaker rejected their demand for a unanimous decision of the House to seek an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Manipur has been in turmoil for around 15 months since May 2023. There has been no solution so far. We want to discuss how to solve the current crisis and have urged the Government of India, particularly the Prime Minister, to intervene and resolve the crisis in Manipur. However, the ruling party is not paying heed to our suggestions. Therefore, we believe it is unnecessary to continue the session, and the opposition MLAs have walked out of the session. Furthermore, the opposition will also boycott the remaining session,” Manipur Congress Legislature Party leader and former CM Okram Ibobi Singh said.

Singh also said that, since violence erupted on May 3 last year, the people of the state have been demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi be approached to help solve the crisis in Manipur.

The five opposition MLAs, including Okram Ibobi, former Speaker Th Lokeshwar, and president of Manipur PCC, K Meghachandra, submitted notice for private members’ resolutions to the Speaker on August 2. The notice, which was to be discussed on Friday, was rejected by the Speaker.

The notice mentioned, “To resolve a unanimous decision of all the members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly that the Prime Minister of India should have a thorough discussion with the Members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly on the matter of the endless and perpetual crisis in the state of Manipur, to bring peace, normalcy, harmony, and safety for the people of Manipur, who are citizens of the country.”
