In a significant move to address environmental concerns arising from developmental activities in Meghalaya, the state’s first-ever government engineering college ‘Shillong Engineering College’ which will open next year will offer a BTech degree in Mining besides 4 other degrees, said State Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma.

By offering this program, the institution hopes to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to balance the demands of development with sustainable environmental practices.

“BTech in Mining is something unique and the need of the hour for a hilly state like us (Meghalaya). Besides Mining the college will have 4 other departments-civil engineering, mechanical, electrical and computer sciences,” said Minister Rakkam A Sangma.

The State Government is working to get the Shillong Engineering College operational as soon as possible, the Minister said.

He said that by the upcoming academic year, the government hopes to be able to launch a few courses at the Shillong Engineering College.

The Minister further informed that works are going on to recruit the faculty and staff at the earliest.
