CM said, “I am talking to the Meghalaya Chief Minister, the state government is working towards normalising the situation.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that he is in talks with his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K Sangma on the recent incidents of Assam-registered vehicles being stopped from entering Meghalaya.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, CM said, “I am talking to the Meghalaya Chief Minister, the state government is working towards normalising the situation.”
On July 26, vehicles from Assam were stopped from moving towards Cherranpunji and Dawki, two tourist hotspots of Meghalaya.
Following the incident, the 14 taxi associations of Meghalaya held a meeting with taxi operators of Assam and resolved that no vehicles from Assam should be stopped from entering Meghalaya and from going anywhere in Meghalaya.
During the meeting both sides unanimously decided to clear any misconception and to stop any misinformation regarding ban on tourist vehicles entering Meghalaya.
Both associations also decided that both private and commercial vehicles can now freely travel to popular tourist destinations such as Shillong, Dawki, Cherrapunjee and other parts of Meghalaya.
Earlier, the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) had sought a ban on outside tourist vehicles ferrying passengers to popular tourist destinations.
Meghalaya Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh said that the state government has no plans to ban tourist vehicles from Assam from entering Meghalaya. Lyngdoh said that there are visitors from Meghalaya touring Assam and the government wants to keep a balance as far as the entry of the tourist vehicles entering Meghalaya is concerned.
Meghalaya Police has also clarified that there are no restrictions on tourist vehicles registered in Assam visiting tourist spots in the hill state.
