Students’ Bodies AASU and KSU Condemn Assam Vehicles Stopped From Entering Meghalaya

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), the apex students’ bodies of Assam and Meghalaya respectively, have condemned and expressed deep concern over yesterday’s incident of vehicles from Assam being stopped and denied entry at several points in Meghalaya.
The joint press release issued by the two students bodies stated that these incidents have affected both private and commercial vehicles, causing distress among tourists.
The issue was discussed under the aegis of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO). During the discussions, the KSU stated that it was not aware of any such incident and emphasised that the organisation does not support such actions.
The KSU said that tourists and tourist vehicles from Assam should be allowed to travel to Meghalaya without any fear. They urged both the Assam and Meghalaya governments to engage in thorough dialogue to resolve the issue permanently.
Additionally, AASU and KSU urged the tourist taxi associations from both states to maintain a cordial relationship and a spirit of mutual understanding. The KSU said that they are committed to taking positive initiatives to address the situation.
The joint press release signed by AASU President Utpal Sarma, General Secretary Sankor Jyoti Barua, KSU President Lambokstarwell Marngar, and General Secretary Donald V. Thabah stressed the importance of friendly relations between Assam and Meghalaya.
They highlighted the similar challenges both states face, including the infiltration of illegal foreigners. The press release further stated that AASU and KSU have historically supported each other in protecting the indigenous Assamese and Khasi populations and remain committed to continuing their collaborative efforts.
On July 26, vehicles from Assam going towards Dawki and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya were stopped at Umtyngar Junction by volunteers belonging to the Hyniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and were asked to turn back.
Pressure groups and NGOs have been checking work permits of migrant workers and putting up check gates to stop the influx of outside workers.
