Pressure Groups have been checking work permits of migrant workers and stopping outside vehicles from entering Meghalaya

People entering Meghalaya from Assam and headed towards Dawki and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya were in for a rude shock today when their vehicles were stopped by members of pressure groups and asked to return back.

The vehicles were stopped at Umtyngar, about 20 km from capital Shillong, by members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation. Umtyngar junction is the place from here the road bifurcates, one side goes to Dawki and the other goes to Cherrapunji.

After being informed about the pressure groups stopping outside vehicles, two police teams, one from Shillong and the other from Sohra, rushed to the spot and prevented the situation from escalating further. Ten members of the pressure group were arrested by the police.

East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtynger told Northeast Live that starting tomorrow, police teams will be posted at Umtyngar and Mawlai Mawiong, the entry point to Shillong from Guwahati.
The SP also said that East Khasi Hills Police has requested for additional forces to maintain law and order in the region.

Situation in Meghalaya continues to be on the edge as pressure groups like the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) have been out on the streets physically stopping non-Meghalaya vehicles and asking them to return back.
These pressure groups have also been putting up check gates and checking documents, particularly of migrant workers.
