LS MP Subba requested for CBSE affiliation of Rai, Gurung, Sherpa and Tamang, indigenous languages of the state.

Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, Indra Hang Subba today met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for the affiliation of Rai, Gurung, Sherpa and Tamang, indigenous languages of the state, in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Subba, who also met Union Minister of State for Education Sanjukta Majumder requested the ministers to personally intervene, highlighting the importance of these languages in preserving the cultural heritage of Sikkim.

He pointed out that in 2023, Sikkim’s CBSE-affiliated schools applied for recognition of these languages for teaching up to the secondary level, but the request was declined due to low enrolment numbers.
Subba underscored the necessity of CBSE affiliation for these languages to be in sync with National Education Policy (NEP) goals and support Sikkim’s educational framework.

He also informed the ministers that Sikkim, despite being one of India’s least populated states, officially recognizes eleven languages as part of its school curriculum, with Bhutia, Lepcha, Limboo, and Nepali already recognized by the CBSE and taught up to the university level and degrees are granted accordingly.
Subba expressed hope that the union ministers would prioritize the inclusion of additional languages and pursue the same magnanimously and support the efforts of Sikkim government in preserving harmony and cultural heritage.
