TMC hits back at Sukanta Majumdar, says the WB BJP president trying to provoke people
A day after West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to integrate North Bengal with Northeast, the ruling Trinamool Congress has hit back at him, saying Majumdar was trying to divert the attention from his failure in the Lok Sabha election.
TMC alleged that Sukanta Majumdar was trying to provoke the people by talking about the bifurcation of West Bengal.
“Sukanta Majumdar is trying to provoke the people by talking about the separation of North Bengal. Majumdar is not friends with anyone, neither with North Bengal nor with South Bengal,” Ghosh said in a video message.
West Bengal BJP President and state education minister Sukanta Majumdar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday and urged him to integrate the eight districts of North Bengal with Northeast.
In a video message, Majumdar said that integrating these districts with the Northeast will usher in a new era of development there.
“I met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and submitted a proposal urging him to integrate North Bengal with Northeast. In the proposal, I have highlighted the similarities between North Bengal and the Northeast. If, in the future, North Bengal is integrated with the northeast while remaining part of West Bengal, then the region will witness widespread development. If he accepts my proposal, this backward area of Bengal will get more funds from the Centre. I am of the opinion that the state government will cooperate.” Majumdar said in the video message.
As per reports, Prime Minister Modi spoke to Majumdar for nearly half an hour to discuss this matter, underscoring the importance the Prime Minister places on the proposal.
The proposal has stirred up political controversy in the state. Many believe that this meeting was not merely routine and signals a significant trend within the BJP, suggesting an official push for the future bifurcation of West Bengal.
Meanwhile, Anant Maharaj, a BJP MP, has advocated for the declaration of a portion of North Bengal, which he refers to as Greater Cooch Behar, as a Union Territory.
It may be mentioned here that Anant Maharaj leads the ‘Greater Cooch Behar Peoples Association,’ which has been advocating for the separation from West Bengal and its designation as a UT since 2015.
